English Summary
Canto V takes place in the second circle of Hell, just below Limbo.
At the entrance sits
Minos
The infernal judge who listens to each soul's confession and, by wrapping
his tail around his body, indicates with the number of coils the circle
to which it is destined.
.
Virgil silences Minos and the two poets move on.
In this circle the lustful are punished, dragged for eternity by a storm that
never stops.
Among the damned, Dante recognises famous figures from history and myth:
Semiramis, Dido, Cleopatra, Helen, Achilles, Paris, and Tristan.
All these characters share overwhelming loves that led them to their ruin.
The heart of the canto is however the encounter with
Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta
Killed by Francesca's husband, Gianciotto Malatesta, while they were
reading together the story of Lancelot and Guinevere.
, Francesca recounts with tenderness and sorrow how their love was born: the two
fell in love while reading a chivalric romance, and the kiss between its protagonists
moved Paolo to kiss her.
Paolo remains silent and weeps, while Francesca speaks attributing their love to an
irresistible force.
Dante is so overwhelmed by compassion, and the empathy he feels towards these two
souls, that he faints: «And I fell as a dead body falls.»
This episode is one of the most celebrated in the Divine Comedy because it
unites love, passion, and tragedy in a scene of great emotional intensity.
